P.S Accessories

You know that feeling when you come across a handmade product that you love instantly and know it is really something special?
That's what happened to me when I found Paula's business P.S Accessories. Paula handmakes the most beautiful genuine leather items in her workroom in Auckland. She uses traditional leathercraft techniques and tools, including handstitching.
I have a Card Holder and a Chloe Bracelet from Paula and they are truly gorgeous.
I know you will love finding out more about P.S Accessories,

Paula, tell us a little bit about yourself...

My name's Paula Scott and although my family has always moved around a lot I spent a good portion of my younger years living and going to school in Grey Lynn in Auckland which was a great place to grow up, so diverse and culturally-rich. My family and I moved to London when I was 17, where I got a degree in Art and Design and spent the next 10 years, until my husband and I moved back to NZ permanently to start a family. We now have a 5 year old daughter and an 8 year old son who keep us very busy!

When did you start P.S Accessories?

My little business started just over 6 months ago, but right from a young age I've been drawn to beautiful aesthetics, I think because my mother was an artist and incredibly creative. She had a massive influence on my career path. Previously I've worked as a freelance florist, web and graphic designer, and in retail. I took 3 years off work when I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 and half years ago. I was still trying to process my mothers death from bowel cancer at the time and wasn't prepared for the news of my own diagnosis at all. I'll never forget the day my then 5 year old had his very first day at school because it also ended up being the first day of my chemotherapy treatment. I felt so mad that I wasn't able to fully focus on him and be as present as I'd hoped on such a big day in his life. But going through the journey of having surgery, treatment and my subsequent recovery has given me the opportunity to reflect on the things that really matter to me in this life. It was such a traumatic experience in so many ways but taught me a lot of valuable lessons and gave me some priceless insights.

At the beginning of 2017 I tentatively allowed myself to become inspired again by some amazingly talented people, one of whom is Emily Mahy of Go Ask Alice bags. She custom made 2 beautiful bags for me and helped me realise my passion for leather accessories. I started buying her off cuts, making little gifts for people out of the amazing leather she uses and when I realised people actually really liked what I was making, I decided to take a leap of faith and bought a few leather craft tools and books and began to self train in traditional leather craft techiques like handstitching leather, setting snaps and domes with good old fashioned wooden mallets and the like. This is something I'm working on all the time - learning and finding out as much about the craft as possible so that my products can be thoughtfully and skillfully made.
I think the thing that has surprised me the most about starting up my own business is the wonderful feedback and support I've received through social media platforms. I've made some lovely friends I've never even met (like Becky!) and that's gold!

How did you name your business?

The name P.S Accessories is basically my initials. Nice and easy!

Blush Jewellery Tray

What is your favourite product from your range?

My favourite product is the P.S card holder because of its simple yet beautiful design. I love things that have form and function and it has both.

What do you do daily to make your business work?

I pray, drink coffee, and work hard!

Where to from here for P.S Accessories?

My business is still very young but at some stage I would love for my products to be available in a few beautiful stores around New Zealand.
I'd love to do an extensive leather course to hone my skills and keep progressing, and I'm also always working on ways to make my business more eco friendly and sustainable - using less plastic, working towards zero waste, etc.

How can we purchase one of your beautiful products?

A selection of my products are also available to buy at Mint Whitianga and at various markets throughout the year.

I try and post regular product and process photos on my Instagram feed, as it's a platform I absolutely love and get lots of inspiration from Xx
