'Photographs are like a pause button for life...' - Lucia Laubscher, Bella Vida Photography

'Photographs are like a pause button for life...'

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m Lucia, a mom to four young daughters, eldest 10, youngest 2...I love art and creating beautiful images, telling stories and just learning about people and cultures. I’m definitely an social introvert - love getting to know people but need some proper ‘me-time’ to recharge (not easily come by with four little ones around as well :-) I’m passionate about people and art and love combining these two in my photography.

Tell us a little bit about Bella Vida Photography

I started my photography career about ten years ago, after the death of my father and the birth of my eldest daughter. I realised I had no great photographs of my father to show my children and it has left a big gap in my portrayal of my dad to them. I realised then that photography is not just a hobby, but a passion.

Our memories fail, but photographs are like a pause button for life. I started taking photographs of my own kids to show them growing up to far away family and started enjoying adding a bit of creativity into my images, telling stories with photographs. I did a photography course to gain more technical skills and knowledge and have been photographing families, babies and bellies ever since. I am based in Auckland, in West Harbour and I offer mostly family, maternity and newborn photography. I’ve recently started experimenting with a bit of composite photography as well, combining a bit more art and fantasy into my photography as well.

What is your favourite part of running your own business?

My favorite part has got to be the flexibility. I have my youngest at home with me during the day and I am able to spend quality time with her everyday. I get to be there for my older three after school in the afternoons and it really just allows me to put my family first.

What is one thing you do daily to make your business work?

Social media postings. I’ve built my business on social media and get at least 95% of my business from Facebook or Instagram contacts. If I don’t post, I don’t get enquiries....

Where to from here with your business?

I’m constantly growing myself as an artist and a photographer and am currently trying to raise funds for a photographic project close to my heart, called “Warrior Women”. My daughters have inspired me to create images of strong women in everyday situations, handling it like the superheros’ they are...You can find out more about this project on BOOSTED:

Other than that I am aiming at growing my business further into a composite art/photography studio where we continue creating artworks featuring the people you love most - family. Telling each family’s story with unique art works and photographs. I’m undergoing some extra training and hoping to gain some extra skills in the process :-) I believe we have to constantly evolve in our art, our skills and our output into the world, adjusting to what is needed and as a growing society we are always changing.
